Astrology consists of four basic elements: the twelve signs, the ten planets, the twelve houses and the aspects between the planets.

A birth chart (also called a natal chart or personality chart) is a picture of the heavens and the planetary positions at the time and place of birth. This configuration is interpreted by using a specific system of rules which have evolved over thousands of years.

The Essence of the Signs

The four seasons and the observed laws of nature are the foundation of Astrology. The signs are divided into three fundamental categories. The first division consists of cardinal, fixed and mutable signs. Next, the signs are said to be either positive-extroverted or negative-introverted. The third division consists of the elements fire, earth, air and water.
Each sign also has a corresponding planet, called its 'ruler', and a 'house'. Similarities exist between a sign, its ruling planet and its house.

Aries is a cardinal, positive/extroverted, fire sign Mars, 1st house
Taurus is a fixed, negative/introverted, earth sign Venus, 2nd house
Gemini is a mutable, positive/extroverted, air sign Mercury, 3rd house
Cancer is a cardinal, negative/introverted, water sign Moon, 4th house
Leo is a fixed, positive/extroverted, fire sign Sun, 5th house
Virgo is a mutable, negative/introverted, earth sign Mercury, 6th house
Libra is a cardinal, positive/extroverted, air sign Venus, 7th house
Scorpio is a fixed, negative/introverted, water sign Pluto, 8th house
Sagittarius is a mutable, positive/extroverted, fire sign Jupiter, 9th house
Capricorn is a cardinal, negative/introverted, earth sign Saturn,10th house
Aquarius is a fixed, positive/extroverted, air sign Uranus,11th house
Pisces is a mutable, negative/introverted, water sign Neptune,12th house

Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable Signs

The seasons determine whether a sign is cardinal, fixed or mutable. For example, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are all cardinal signs because each of them is, in its own way, a sign of beginning. Aries is the beginning of spring, Cancer the beginning of summer, Libra the beginning of autumn and Capricorn the beginning of winter (or, the opposite if you are in the Southern Hemisphere).

Cardinal - Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn

People who fall under these signs all take the initiative, but in different ways. Arians want to take the initiative in action. 'Let's do it!' would be their motto. Cancerians take the initiative based on emotional instinct and gut feeling. Librans use rational thought to take the initiative in social settings. Capricornians use common sense to take the initiative in practical matters.

Fixed - Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius

The signs that are in the middle of each season are said to be fixed. A fixed sign is characterized by persistence and stability in goals, behavior and personal style. People born under these signs can be stubborn, conservative and inflexible in their spheres. They tend to 'drag their feet' if uninterested in something.

Mutable - Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces

These signs mark the end of the seasons, the time when one season changes into another. They are called the signs of knowledge. Their periods are turbulent and changeable. This is reflected in the restless nature of the people born under these signs. They have a need for change and novelty. They are always seeking new experiences and need outlets for their energy.

The signs alternate successively between positive/extroverted and negative/introverted.

The positive/extroverted signs are Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius. Their energy is active and outgoing. People born under these signs are said to be positive and are generally considered more open and liberal than those with negative/introverted signs. They tend to get very enthusiastic ('Yes! Let's do it!') about new projects, but may lose interest down the road.

The negative/introverted signs are Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces. These people tend to be introverted, reserved, cautious and passive. Before making a decision, they like to think matters over carefully. They guard themselves and those close to them carefully, often dwelling in their own inner world. The negative/introverted signs are more conservative than the positive/extroverted ones. They need time to warm up to a new project or idea ('Hmm. I'm not sure Once hooked, though, they can show great endurance and stamina.

The Elements: Fire, Earth, Air and Water

FireThe energy of ideals and vitality.

Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are the fire signs. People born under these signs are high-spirited, independent and sincere. They are eager and lively but become depressed if nothing 'special' is happening in their lives. They openly show both their anger and pleasure. The Fire signs are also highly intuitive and idealistic. Physical exercise is important to them.

EarthThe energy of matter, earth and everything tangible.

Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are the earth signs. People born under these signs are down-to-earth and like to keep both feet firmly on the ground. They want tangible results and believe in things they can see and touch. They are cautious, serious-minded and realistic. They like progress to come gradually. The earth signs have a tendency to be rather serious.

AirThe energy of ideas and interaction.

Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are the air signs. People born under these signs have strong ties to the world of ideas and social interaction. They enjoy discussions on diverse subjects. They are sociable and have good reasoning abilities. Normally they are positive, friendly and open; at the same time, however they can be impersonal and aloof.

WaterThe energy of emotions and intuition.

Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are the water signs. People born under these signs have strong emotions and vivid imaginations. They are sensitive and often live in their own inner world. The water signs use psychic intuition to evaluate people and causes. They are often shrewd, clever and resourceful. They are cautious and don't allow 'just anybody' to get close to them. Even if they appear calm, they may be experiencing a lot of inner excitement or turmoil.

Interaction of the Elements

An individual is a combination of many signs. Depending on the position of the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Midheaven, some or all of the elements may be powerful in a chart Usually two elements will dominate. The interaction of the various elements are described below.

Fire-waterIdeals & Emotions. This suggests a person with intense feelings who gravitates towards activities in which intuition and imagination are combined. Earth-waterThe Energy of Matter & Emotions. This suggests cautiousness with an emphasis on safety. This is a reserved, practical and emotional individual. Despite being sensitive and imaginative, he/she still wants to keep both feet firmly on the ground.

Air-waterMental Energy & the Energy of Emotions. This suggests a certain conflict between rational thought and emotional intuition.
